Lumineers vs. Veneers | Which is better for you? Northridge Dentist

So, you’ve decided you want that perfect Hollywood smile and you’re torn between two options, Lumineers or Traditional Veneers. Both of these options have the same function. They are made of a thin porcelain material that are bonded on top of your teeth to provide a more attractive smile. Lumineers and Veneers solve a variety of cosmetic problems, discoloration of teeth, stains, gaps, cracked teeth, misshapen teeth, and chipped teeth. Before you decide which option is best for you, let’s discuss the similarities/differences so that you can make an informed decision.

As stated in the beginning of the article both options improve your appearance by hiding dental flaws and creating a whiter smile. Lumineers and traditional veneers are made from a thin porcelain that’s strong, durable, and easy to maintain. Because of that, they look natural and are comfortable to wear. The comfortability of each is also increased because they are custom made to fit atop your smile. In terms of wear over time, they are not likely to stain or change color. Both can also be purchased around the same price.

The main difference between the two is the preparation that is required when being bonded to your teeth. Traditional Veneers creates a natural appearance that doesn’t look too bulky or large. To attain this look, roughly 5 mm of enamel is removed from the tooth. This leaves the tooth unprotected until the veneers are placed, which is a concern for some patients in the long run. This process happens within 2 visits.

Lumineers are also bonded on top of teeth, but the process is less invasive. Enamel is not removed and this is a big plus for most patients. Although it is rare, if the lumineers happen to detach, patients are often relieved that their original teeth are still functionable. With traditional veneers, a good portion of enamel is removed leaving the tooth less than perfect. However, lumineers may look slightly more bulky than traditional veneers because of this. They are more stain resistant compared to veneers and you are able to eat and drink normally without any problems. Little or no preparation is involved during this process making the whole procedure complete within 2 visits.
