You know the good old dentist saying, “brush and floss your teeth” and of course you listen because you want healthy teeth and gums. You’re a pro at brushing your teeth. You do it twice a day for 2 minutes, but what about flossing? Well, you think you know what you’re doing but you aren’t too sure. Even though we’ve been flossing for years, it may come as a surprise to learn that some of us have been doing it all wrong.
First there are different types of floss that you can pick from according to what you prefer. You can choose from waxed to unwaxed, from flavored to unflavored, woven floss, or anti-shred floss. Research shows that there is no difference in plaque removing ability between each type. There is also something called pre-threaded floss. Though it isn't as effective as regular floss, it may be best for you if you have arthritic problems.
Unlike brushing your teeth, flossing is often overlooked. People know it should be done, but few know how to properly do it. Here's how:
1. Pull 18 -24 inches of floss from your floss dispenser.
2. Wrap the ends of the floss around your index and middle fingers
Now comes technique. This is where most people make the mistake. Many times individuals do things like inserting the floss between the teeth and then pulling it out or inserting the floss between the teeth and pulling it back and forth. It's close, but it's not quite how you do it.
3. Start with your back teeth and insert the floss between your teeth.
4. Pull the floss around each tooth in a C shape.Pull it back and forth, and up and down (sort of like you're scrubbing the tooth)
5. Do step 4 to the other side
6. Repeat with other teeth
Now that you know how to properly floss, you're one step closer to healthy teeth and gums. If you're looking for a Dentist in Northridge CA, come and visit Dr. Barizo at Perfect Smiles. We'll be happy to give you more tips to improve your oral health.
